AnyLogic™ 5.0
The unique structure of the AnyLogicTM simulation environment allows for multiple dynamic simulation approaches to be integrated into a single model. By simultaneously supporting discrete events and continuous equations hybrid models can be easily created to more accurately capture a system's structure and dynamics. This allows for portions of a simulation to be modeled in a molecular "Agent Based" style with other portions of the model simulated in an aggregate "System Dynamics" fashion.
Each of the two approaches have their own advantages. The "Agent Based" structure allows for information about each individual to be tracked, and aggregate data can be derived by summing the number of "Agents" in each state. The "System Dynamics" structure requires much less processing power, and can be used to simulate populations that are too large for an "Agent Based" structure.
The flexibility of AnyLogicTM allows both approaches to be easily and seamlessly integrated into the same model. For portions of the model where individual information tracking is required, an "Agent Based" structure can be used, and for portions where performance is critical and detailed information is not needed, a "System Dynamics" approach can be applied.
